August 24, 2011 ~ Exit Slip

During tonight's class, we discussed several ideas. Whether our conversations dealt with teaching to student's strengths or the importance of teaching/learning styles, each of you had a lot to contribute. Now it is your time to reflect on these past 3-hours and discuss the most salient points. In 100 words, summarize what you learned tonight and explain how it fits into your teaching philosophy.

  1. I had never seen the alphabet activity done before. I had never seen a visual representation of the difference between general education and special education students.

  2. THe most salient point tonight were when we talked about focusing on students strengths and talking about how we should work on pointing strengths over weaknesses. Practical application with the alaphabet activity opened our eyes to how the students with disabilities will struggle and helped us realize how the students might get distracted if they struggle.

  3. It is important to focus on students' strengths. We were introduced to CBM, and discussed how students with disabilities struggle with norm based assessments.

  4. I felt like the alphabet activity really allowed me to see and feel the way someone who is a special education student feels. This class also helped me see that focusing on someone's strengths, not their weaknesses, can help improve their weaknesses. I think these two points fit into my idea of a "safe classroom." In my classroom I hope to help the students focus on their strengths, and not the weaknesses as our society tends to.
